Update your Dell BIOS and device drivers
The Dell Command | Update (DCU) app (or the alternate “Dell Update” app) allows you to discover and install driver, BIOS and firmware updates on your system. The app allows you to keep your system up to date by automatically interrogating your system and comparing it to the available updates on dell.com/support for your specific system.
You may have either the Dell Update app or the Dell Command | Update app, installed on your computer. This article refers to the Dell Command | Update app, but you can follow the steps with either app.
Just as your Windows operating system needs to be updated regularly, your Dell firmware and device drivers should also be kept up-to-date. The update process using this app is simple. Please follow the steps in this article about once a month to keep your computer running efficiently.
NOTE: You have to run the Dell Command | Update multiple times… until it comes back and shows that there are no more updates to install.
NOTE: If you are not using a Dell computer, then you can skip this article.

The discovered updates are listed. Security, Critical and Recommended updates are selected by default. Unless you have a specific reason not to, you should keep the pre-selected options.
Let’s take a special look at the warning shown above:
If your computer requires a BIOS update, you will see this warning. Please make sure that your computer is plugged into power, and that it does not become unplugged during the BIOS update. A computer that loses power or has external devices (peripherals) plugged or unplugged during the BIOS install can become unusable. If you see this warning, please read it twice.
Customize your selection
If you would like to modify the selection of updates to install, click the “VIEW DETAILS” link on the search results page. This will pop up a window showing the individual updates to be installed and allow you to deselect one or more. Remember that the app has preselected the important drivers, and unless you have a specific reason to skip one, you should allow all pre-selected drivers to be installed.
Click Close when you are finished customizing your selection.
Installation Complete
Once all updates have been installed, you will be presented with this Installation Complete page. It may or may not prompt you to reboot. We strongly recommend that you reboot either way.
NOTE: The app may reboot during the installation process. If so, it will automatically resume installing the remaining updates.
Firmware update
If your selected updates include Firmware updates, then you will see the following screen during the reboot after installation. The blue bar will probably travel across several times while the app installs several updates.
NOTE: During this process DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER.
NOTE: The app may reboot during this process as well.
Once the updates have been installed
We recommend running the Dell Command | Update app again. Sometimes more updates will become available now that your computer has been updated.
