Webex Tips for participating in a meeting
This article will help prepare you to participant in Webex meetings by testing your computer and by guiding you to avoid some difficulties.
While joining a meeting is very straight-forward, you may want to make sure that your computer’s camera, video, speakers and mic are configured correctly before you join the meeting. You may also want to learn a few tips to help you participate without causing interruptions.

How do I join a Webex meeting?
To join a meeting, you must have been invited. The invite will contain a link to click at the time of the meeting (or perhaps up to 5 minutes before). It will also contain the meeting ID, passcode and dial-in information. If you click the link, then you will not need to enter the meeting ID and passcode (they are embedding in the link). If you join another way, or you dial in, then you will need to enter them when prompted.
Choose your device.
Webex is available through your computer, phone, tablet or iPad. If the meeting requires you to view the other participants or shared material, then you will need to use a device with a display. If this is an audio-only meeting, then just a telephone will do. You may also wish to use both a computer (for video) *and* a phone (for audio). In this case, please remember to mute the computer (see “Mute is your friend” below).
Test your device(s) before the meeting
Direct a browser to: https://www.webex.com/test-meeting.html This site will generate a test meeting with just you as a participant. It will allow you to test your camera, speaker and microphone settings to make sure that they are configured correctly before you join an actual meeting.
Download the Webex app to your desired device
You can connect to a Webex meeting through a browser, but you will have a more stable connection with more features if you download and install the app. You will want to install the app before your meeting to make sure there are no difficulties, but the installation takes only a minute or two.
You can install the app when you test your device’s configuration with the link provided in Tip #2.
Mute is your friend
Please use the mute button in WebEx when you are not speaking. You may want to announce your attendance, and then immediately mute yourself so as not to cause any interruptions.
While you’re on a call or in a meeting, select the mute icon () at the bottom of the meeting window. You’ll know you’re muted when the button turns red (). To allow others to hear you, simply click the button until it turns gray again .
Muting yourself is especially important during these times:
- You are dialing into the meeting with your phone. If you are using both your phone and the microphone on your computer, it can cause a loud squealing noise called feedback. If this happens, please hang up the phone or mute your computer.
- You are typing on your keyboard. Since the keys are probably close to your microphone, the sound of your typing will be amplified to the other participants.
- If you are using a headset, and it is close to your microphone, then this can also cause feedback. Please sit further away from the microphone.
- You are working from home and there are others in the house causing noise.
Please remember to unmute yourself when you wish to speak.
Check your background
Especially if you are working from home, please choose a spot with an uncluttered background. If there are many, or bold items behind you, it can be a distraction to others.
Position your camera at eye level
Looking into your camera at eye level will produce the most natural view for others.
Leave the meeting
When you wish to leave the meeting, click the “Leave Meeting” icon.
