Zero-Day
A zero-day is a computer software vulnerability previously unknown to the developer. A zero-day exploit identifies when that vulnerability is actively being exploited. The device running the software is susceptible to infiltration until the vulnerability is remediated, typically by a developer’s software patch.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
If you have any Apple devices, then you should update them as soon as possible.
HOW DO I UPDATE MY APPLE DEVICES?
On most Apple devices, you:
- Open Settings.
- Tap on General.
- Tap on Software Update.
Please see more details on updating your devices in the “More Information” block at the top of this article.
WHY SHOULD I UPDATE?
Hackers are already exploiting this zero-day. You may not be a specific target, but your device could still get attacked by bots.
WHAT COULD A HACKER DO IF THEY ATTACK MY DEVICE?
Apple has not released detailed information about the vulnerabilities (to prevent additional attacks), but they have indicated that the vulnerabilities affect the Kernel, the core of the operating system, and WebKit, and the engine behind Safari. The vulnerabilities could allow hackers to execute malicious code.
COULD THE UPDATES CAUSE PROBLEMS TO ME?
There have been some notable instances when Apple patches have caused problems. However, this patch does not contain any feature updates, limiting its scope, and the danger it addresses adjusts the balance of concern.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE ANY APPLE DEVICES?
Then you don’t need to worry about this update. However, you are not completely off the hook. You should use the opportunity to update your computers and Android phone… they need regular updates as well. *All* devices should be updated regularly.
